Fingal County Council and The RHA School Studio Award  Recipient 2021

Fingal Arts Office in partnership with the Royal Hibernian Academy School (RHA) are delighted to announce Joanne Reid as the recipient of the 2021 Fingal County Council and RHA School Studio Award. 

Joanne Reid, a visual artist working in sculpture, commenced her residency at the end of September 2021. The award provides a funded studio space for the period of one year and offers the recipient an opportunity to develop their practice within the institutional framework of the RHA. 

Chief Executive of Fingal County Council, AnneMarie Farrelly, praised the partnership. ‘Working hand in hand with the RHA to provide awards like this one has been an enriching and important experience. Art is a gift from which we all benefit. It brings us joy in it’s beauty, it allows us to explore difficult concepts and it challenges us to consider new perspectives. Fingal County Council is very proud to be a part of this partnership and we wish Joanne Reid every success in her new studio space.’

Speaking about the Award, Director of Services Emer O’Gorman commented, ‘Programmes like this one are a vital link to Arts funding for creatives like Joanne Reid. We are delighted to partner with the RHA to provide this residency and look forward to seeing the work evolve as Joanne thrives in the studio and benefits from the time and space to develop her art.’

Joanne Reid’s work often begins as a direct response to chance encounters with the materials, objects and spaces that form our built environment. Reid’s sculptural practice is informed by both ideas and experiences. In the work there is often a shift in the materiality or function of an object, providing new ways of looking at the everyday. References to art history and an ongoing interest in the power of display are also a feature of Reid’s work.

In 2016, Reid completed the MA in Art and Research Collaboration (ARC) at IADT. Recent exhibitions include Home Bodies at Glandwr, Chapelizod, Dublin (2021), ARTWORKS: Dearly Beloved, Visual Carlow (2019) and Futures, Series 3, Episode 2, RHA (2018). She is a recipient of The Arts Council Visual Arts Bursary Award (2020), the Basic Space Artist Residency Award (2016) and the Fire Station Sculpture Workshop Award and Bursary (2013).
