Velvet Strand, Portmarnock

With an 88km coastline stretching from Howth to north of Balbriggan, three large protected estuaries and salt marsh habitats with 13 major beaches, our natural heritage has a strong conservation and amenity value.

The bathing season officially starts in June.  Lifeguards are deployed on all identified beaches from 11am to 7pm at weekends only for the month of June and then 7 days a week for July and August.

Members of the public are advised to ensure they only swim at identified bathing areas, take note of the flags flying when they visit and to obey any instructions given by the lifeguards.  There is a noticeboard at each identified beach where useful information such as Bathing Water Quality notices are posted.

Alternatively you can log on to www.beaches.ie for information and updates concerning all our beaches. Parents/guardians of small children are asked to keep watch at all times where children are concerned, in order to prevent any accidents.
